Jess van Campen is a certified end-of-life doula and death administrator. She keeps people company through dying, helps families get their wishes written down while there is time, and takes on the paperwork a death leaves behind, for people and for animals. She works in person locally and remotely anywhere.
I came to it the ordinary way: sorting out a death in my own family and discovering that nobody tells you any of it, and that the admin arrives exactly when you have the least capacity for it. I trained as a doula so I could be useful in the room, and I kept the administrator’s habits — lists, follow-ups, a phone voice that gets past the hold music — because that is where most of the help turned out to be needed.
How does Jess work?
- Plainly. I will tell you what the body is doing, what the form is for, and what it will cost, in ordinary words.
- Alongside, not instead. Hospice, doctors, lawyers, accountants and funeral directors all have their jobs. Mine is the gaps between them, and you.
- Without an agenda. Non-denominational. Nothing you have to believe, and every ritual you want honored.
- In person locally, remote anywhere. Vigil is in person. Planning and death admin happen on the phone and in shared documents, which travel fine.
- Unshockable. Family feuds, estranged children, second families, debts, secrets. I have heard it, and it does not change how I treat you.

What I am not
I am not a lawyer, an accountant, a nurse or a therapist, and I will not pretend to be. When something needs one, I will say so and help you find a good one. What I am is the person who stays, and the person who makes the eleventh call to the pension office so you do not have to say the words out loud again.
